Da História

Não passo todo o tempo que passo em Bruxelas a admirar jovens espojados na calçada da Grande Place. Aproveito, também, para por algumas leituras em dia. Descobri este perfil de A J P Taylor, historiador que admiro muito com um trecho de um discurso de Churchill por ocasião da morte do appeaser Chamberlain (o qual tinha diso, anos antes, seu principal rival):

"In one phase men seem to have been right in another they seem to have been wrong. Then again a few years later, when the perspective of time has lenghtened, all stands in a different standing. There is a new proportion. There is another scale of values. History with its flickering lamp stumlbes along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive ts echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days."

Esta forma de descrever a História lembra-me um outro autor, mais desconhecido entre nós: Wlter Benjamin. Teria Chirhill tido lguma oportunidade de o ter lido antes do seu suicídio?
