Went to the White drawing room to receive the three chiefs from Bechuanaland, who are Christians. The Chiefs who are very tall and very black, but their hair is not woolly. One of he Chiefs is said to be a very remarkable and itelligent man. One of their chief objectives in coming was to obtain a permit from the Government to suppress strong drink, which demoralises and kills the poor natives. Alas! everywhere this terrible evil, which has such a fatal effect on the population, seems to follow civilisation!
