O Novo Hindenburg

"The president of the republic, Field Marshall Hindenburg, long distrustful of Hitler, was at last persuaded by right wing advisers that the Nazis must be given a chance to show whether they could deal with Germany's problems. He may have thought that office alongside right wing parties in a coalition would show them ups as politicians like the rest, good at barracking and opposition but not at providing answers to the country's needs. He may have thought that they could be tamed (...). He asked Hitler to be chancellor and in so doing made what must be reckoned one of the momentous decisions of the century."

in pag 393 "the Twentieth Century", J. M. Roberts
